Everyone's favorite Persian Princess from Season 6 showed her Fall '10 collection in Dallas last week.
Fabulous episode, no? We don't know who to congratulate more...
His surgeon...
Or her colorist? As always, we leave the judging to you.
But seriously, this was a fun and fabulous challenge that SHOULD have yielded fun and fabulous results.
Unfortunately, after a season full of "make a pretty dress" challenges, the designers couldn't break out of the box and make something over the top and Mackie-esque, so we got a bunch of bland black and white dresses instead. Honestly, that runway show pissed us off. Where was the color? Where was the sense of drama? Why are we looking at a bunch of ball gowns? You just know Chris March was screaming at his TV last night.
And poor Tim looks like he needs to get some sleep.
Anyway, auf wiedersehen, Princess Jasmine. While we can say it really blows that you were sent home, we can't deny that what also blew was your garment.
Unfortunately, we also agreed with Heidi when she said the rest of it looked like a Halloween costume, which pains us a bit because she keeps making that same stupid statement week after week. "It looks like a Halloween costume" is the new "Mother of the bride."
We know a lot of you were pretty upset about this auf, and truth be told, so were we because we like Shirin and think she's pretty talented, but come on. This is just bad, bad, bad all around. There's nothing fabulous or eye-catching or theatrical about this look. It looks like a slightly shredded ball gown and that's it. Where's the glitz and the glamour?
Cause honeys, that ain't glitz or glamour; that's just sad-looking.
It's a shame, because she's been doing some really good work on fairly consistent basis, but that's Project Runway. You can bang out great stuff week after week but if you get the lowest score, you're Audi. We know a lot of you don't agree with the auf and think that either Logan or Christopher should have gone home and we can't say we blame you for that, but we can't really defend this look either. Them's the breaks.
We will say this: there was a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth in T LOunge last night, along with a lot of comments to the effect that this is the "WORST SEASON EVER!!!!!" but all we could think upon reading them was that the show must be doing something right to garner that kind of emotional response. Do we one hundred percent agree with the outcome? No, not one hundred percent. Do we think it was uncalled-for? No, not really. We wish we could come up with a definitive response here but we can't. Good designer made a shitty dress. Good designer goes home. That's the way of Project Runway and it's been like that since season one. Austin Scarlett, people? Nick Verreos? Kara Janx? Kayne? Chris March?
How priceless is that facial expression? This is the face of a designer in the throes of her worst nightmare: synthetic fabrics and Cher references.
Still, even we had to admit that her solution was a good one.
And we always say with these types of challenges that the designer has to be willing to put her foot down when the demands are too far outside her comfort zone, so she gets a ton of points for that. She's one of the few in the history of the show who managed to assert herself and she may be the only one who managed to do it without being a jerk about it.
Still, we think this look was a bit over-praised by the judges.
Yes, she came up with a smart solution, but did she really transform the dress? Aside from the stitching and the belt, all she did was shorten the hem and change the straps.
And even those minor changes had problems. The hem was uneven and the line of the skirt was bordering on unflattering.
And the straps got a little wonky in the back.
Still, we have to admit it was a pretty good job, all things considered. The stitching really was a brilliant solution.
But let's face it: it was a solution to a problem partially of her own making. She needed to jazz up the dress somehow because without the stitching it would have been more obvious that she hardly changed the dress at all.
"Irina, how did you get this gorgeous color?"
"Thank you, Tim. I'm afraid I was born with it. Oh, I make sure to use a good bronzer and weekly trips to the tanning salon help, but it's all just good genes."
We'll still say it: thank God for bitchy girls who think their shit don't stink. Otherwise the show would be deadly dull.
But again, we think this dress was over praised. Yes, that color really is gorgeous, but that's about the only thing we like about this dress.
Oh, it's well-made, certainly. No problems there.
And while we personally don't like lace dresses, there's no denying that they're back on the runways lately.
But even though it fits well and is on trend, it still comes off as a somewhat dowdy dress.
It's those sleeves, kittens. We just can't get past them.
They make her boobs look like they're melting.
She's an attractive woman with a great figure and those sleeves tend to scream "coverup" to us. We think that's why the judges called it "age-appropriate." Sure, it would be a good option for an older woman who needed some fashion magic to camouflage her figure flaws, but as far as we can tell, this gal didn't have any figure flaws. Irina could have gone with a bolder cut than this and come out with something a little sexier. Instead she went from bride to mother of the bride.
Upon reflection (because that is what we do Chez T Lo, we reflect on Project Runway) we think Team Girlie should have won this challenge.
Don't get us wrong, we liked Irina and Gordana's work, but the pieces from this collection, bland though they may be, had a little bit more style to them.
Model: Vanessa Fitzgerald
Still, we like the work on the neckline of that top.
And we like the sexy, slightly romantic back of it.
The only part we could really do without was that sash.
Just a little too big for us. We're resigned to the tights. We don't love them but they are in style.
It's got a little bit of a Joan Holloway vibe, especially with the scarf.
And again, we loved the back. They really went for the walking away effect on these two pieces.
Our only real problem with it is in the choice of fabrics. This could have really looked high end if they'd chosen better.
They weren't just more stylish than Irina's looks, they were also more salable, because CH wisely decided to go all separates, which is very department store-friendly.
And we do like the skirt, especially from the back.
...
What else is there to say? It evoked a film noir aesthetic without being too literal, but it wasn't exactly an exciting look. Middle of the pack.
This was a pretty decent entry, all things considered.
Model: Ebony Jointer
And the almost invisible details, like the lacing and the little bows. The only thing that irritates us slightly is the asymmetrical lace around the top.
All in all, another decent middle-of-the-pack entry.
Model: Kalyn Hemphill
We don't mind the lace cutouts so much, except they're sending a message and that message says "Insert penis here."
That's not true; we do kind of mind the cutouts because they're so cheap-looking.
And worse, the whole thing is pretty badly executed, what with all the puckering. Still, take away the dryer sheet and pretend that it's well executed and it's not a bad design. It's just barely a middle-of-the pack entry, though. It's like one point above a bottom three.
