Yea or Nay: Cracked-Out Sweaters

Although to be honest, we're not sure they can be called sweaters at all. More like ambitious scarves.

These are from Korean designer Wooyoungmi's fall 2009 collection. Lorenzo loves them. Tom's not so sure he'd want to be standing next to him in public should he ever decide to wear one.

Okay, that's not true. We're both in agreement that from a design perspective; a purely aesthetic point of view, these are all certainly eye-catching and interesting. Because really, that's the only way you can look at these. You certainly can't bring functionality into the discussion.

We don't know who would wear something like this but one thing's for sure: they won't be waving their hands in the air like they just don't care.

Yea or Nay: Bra Exposure

Chin up, tits out, ladies!

Before we say anything else, we have to say that the skirt Sevigny's wearing is absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately, Saldana's skirt was designed to look good long enough to make it down a runway and back. In real life, it looks like she slept in it.

As for boobapalooza...we can't yawn hard enough. Maybe if we were the type of guys who got excited over boobs we'd have a stronger opinion, but this look has been tried countless times since Madonna first unveiled hers a quarter century ago and it never really caught on past the short-lived trend stage. To be honest, we think it looks a little silly. The equivalent of a woman coming out of the ladies room with her skirt accidentally stuffed into her panty hose.

We're more concerned about the fact that they both replicated the runway looks so slavishly. Think for yourselves, ladies. Or more accurately, let your stylists promote an image that makes it look like you think for yourselves.

For what it's worth, here's the rest of the titastic Miu Miu fall '09 collection. We think the clothes are gorgeous, but we're bored by the boobs. Then again, we always were.

Yea or Nay: Ripped Tights

Darlings, let's look at a trend that was old when the Olsen twins were forming eyelids.

Yes, it's the ripped-tight look that's come and gone so many times in the past 30 years, it's almost silly to call it a trend. Among the latest celebrity purveyors are Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears and Ashley Olsen.

It's also been making appearances on the runway. Alexander Wang brought it to his fall 2008 collection, and now Monique Lhuillier is suggesting it for a more sophisticated, mainstream type of look for Fall 2009.

We think it looks interesting with high-end clothes, but only as a styling choice for the runway. It brings some visual interest and offers a contrast when displaying the clothes, but we can't say we'd want to see them worn like this in the real world. We do love the tops worn under the dresses, though. That's at least something new.

Trends for Fall '09: Menswear

Welcome Back, Annie Hall!

Like most trends, it's stuff we've seen before only slightly re-imagined. Fashionistas have been flirting with the menswear-as-womenswear trend ever since Marlene Dietrich donned her first tuxedo. Although some of the looks we're seeing lately come across as a little too literal too us.

Case in point. These don't look like womenswear to us at all. They look exactly like they're wearing men's clothes, right down to the tailoring.

Balenciaga, Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton

At least these looks have a slightly more interpretive quality to them. We only really like the Calvin Klein though and even then, we don't love it.

Have we mentioned that the '80s are back?

Stella McCartney, Tommy Hilfiger, Yves Saint Laurent

Love that YSL. The rest? We could take or leave.

Hermès

We have to say, these are our favorites. Yes, they also come across as a little too literal, but they're so luxurious-looking that we can't find fault with them. LOVE that first jacket. In fact, we love it so much, we want it, which should tell you something about how literal it is.

We don't know, it's something we're kind of ambivalent about. This was a trend that started when it was considered shocking for women to wear pants at all. Doing it in the modern age strips it of any subversive qualities, which, it seems to us, was the whole point in the first place. Now it just seems so done.
