Jesus & Amy

Let's bang this one out while we're getting the RuPaul screencaps, kittens.

We never could have predicted that these two would work well together. Not that either of them are problematic from a personality point of view, just that their styles seem so different. And yet, they were really cute together. If we were skinny little 21-year-old queens, we'd think Amy was the most fabulous and glamorous fruitfly we could wish for. We're telling you: it's that Streisand eye makeup. It just kills us.

Model: Holly Ridings

And it has to be said, they managed to put together a pretty fabulous look.

We love that they essentially created their own fabric from dozens of little pieces stitched together. Frankenfabric. It's a unique look and - we know we're not supposed to say this - it looked expensive.

And we REALLY loved that shrug/vest/ruffled tire thing.

Although we didn't quite love the way it came together in the back.

Still, we thought it was a really well done look with some innovation added. We honestly can't tell who was more responsible this design. From what little we know of the two of them at this point, it doesn't really look like either one of them. We suspect that's because, unlike a lot of the other teams, this was a true collaboration. Sharp-eyed minions point out that Amy wore a shrug like that to her audition. And since the gown kind of fits Jesus' over-the-top aesthetic, we guess this really was a true collaboration.

Models: Brandise Danesewich/Sophia Lee

And while we know how much most of you minions hate harem pants, we have to say that this was a truly ingenious way of reinterpreting Ping & Jesse's lace toga.

Also, we need to note that we were kind of sorry to see Sophia sent home. She's a bitch and a pain in the ass and we understand why no one wanted to work with her but she had a hell of a walk.

Anyway, this look. The reason we admire it is because the harem pants actually mimic the line of Ping's over-the-shoulder skirt pretty effectively.

And the tank top with just the hint of lace showing was a nice down-market way of interpreting the look. We don't LOVE this outfit from a style perspective, but we applaud it from a design perspective. In the immortal words of La Nina, they "really thought about it."

Very Good, Good, Not So Good

We're running the gamut, kittens!

Gotta say, after the first two episodes, Emilio is the clear front-runner from where we're sitting.

Model: Holly Ridings

Because THAT is a knockout of a dress. And all the people who had less-than-kind things to say about Holly's looks can shut it because that bitch's walk can knock a house down.

More than just having superior technical skills and design skills, Emilio's also got a surprisingly strong sense of style. She's the epitome of looking put together.

We like how he used a technique similar to the one he used last week - overlaid panels of a contrasting fabric - but made a dress totally different from the previous one.

And it fits her like a glove. Shouldabin a top 3 at least.

Speak up, Ben. No, really. "Quiet" gets you auf'd. Loudmouths get camera time. Honestly, do we have to teach you everything?

Model: Sophia Lee

It's alright. Ben described this as a classic dress that can be worn now or ten years from now. Well, we kinda had a strong negative reaction to that idea.

This is, after all, a design competition. When you deliberately go for a design that's so classic it doesn't fit into any time period, that's another way of saying "I'm playing it safe."

There's nothing really wrong with the dress. It fits. It's a pretty color. It's cute. But it's just kinda boring.

And we don't think he accomplished the "upside down tulip" thing he said he was going for.

Anna seems sweet, but she really needs to take a deep breath, find her center, and lighten the fuck up.

Model: Cerri McQuillan

Because while this dress demonstrates a technical precision, it is one morose-looking garment. A Dorothea Lange photograph in dress form.

And we don't think it's the dye job. She actually wound up with a subtle, sophisticated print and she could have gone in a lot of directions with it.

But going the "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" route was probably not the best use of it.

Not to mention, the fit wasn't all that great. It kind of hung on her body. And that drab ribbon was a horrible choice for trim.

We think her earnest, intellectual approach has a place at the table, but in the end, you have to make clothes that people enjoy looking at and want to wear. These over-studied pieces of hers aren't going to keep her in the game.

The Other Good-Enoughs

So many, poodles. SO MANY!!!

Jonathan sez: "I'm trying to discover the place where gritty meets pretty."

T Lo (after Jonathan says this two more times) sez: "Is this gonna be a thing with you?"

We can't be mad at him, though. Because if we were contestants on Project Runway, "So what are you guys going to wear to the judging tomorrow?" would be EXACTLY the question we'd go around asking.

Model: Brandise Danesewich

Okay, we get it now. That whole gritty/pretty thing.

The bodice is really cute and kind of interesting. It would have to be because except for that and the belt, there's not a lot of visual interest going on in the front.

He tried in the back but the execution failed him.

But there's enough going on there to leave us intrigued. A decent first entry.

Amy sez: "I like being different."

Model: Valeria Leonova

T Lo sez: "Honey, there's 'different,' and then there's putting a soap dish on your tit."

It's a shame, because we really like the skirt, but that light fixture on her boob is driving us to distraction. WHY?

Cute from the back, even if the skirt's a little diaper-y.

She almost had something really cute and stylish, but she ruined it with that boobtrocity. She needs editing skills.

Ben sez:"I like to see someone evolve into another personality when they put something on of mine."

Model: Sophia Lee

T Lo sez: "Yeah, we used to wish we were Wonder Woman too."

We get it, where he's coming from. That whole space queen/superhero thing. It's kind of interesting how they cast designers with some fairly rigid design aesthetics. It just occured to us because we're about to utter a criticism that we just realized we've said more than once already.

Namely, that if he's going to keep pulling out these comic book looks week after week, the judges are likely to get bored with it quickly.

He's also going to need to ramp it up in the technical department. That back looks a right mess. Interesting seam placements, but the shininess of the fabric and the puckery of the seams doesn't help with the statement.

Still, another interesting first entry. We'll see how well his genre-inspired aesthetic will work when he has to make a dress out of kitchen utensils.
