Emilio & Ben

Kittens, we have so much catching up to do!

Model: Brittany Oldehoff

We had a somewhat irrationally negative reaction to this dress.

Our initial reaction was that it was "more of the same" from him, but that's really not true, technically speaking. You can put this next to his other entries and see that it's not the same, not quite.

But there IS a similarity in the broad sense: cocktail dress + technique. In previous weeks, the technique was applique; this week it's lacing.

And WAY TOO MUCH lacing to boot. We tend to automatically look at lacing as a bit of honky-tonk tackiness. Sue us, we're snotty bitches.

And while we realize Heidi isn't exactly prim in her style and that this dress would have been altered, if not rebuilt from the ground up to fit her, we think that bust is way too low for a gal as bodacious as her, especially since she'd be wearing it shortly after giving birth, when her jugs runneth over.

On the other hand, we agreed with the judges when they said they found his willingness to alter the dress right there and then according to their critiques to be a pretty admirable thing and highly useful when dealing with a cover shot.

An unestablished designer SHOULD be ready to jump through hoops if he wants his look featured on the cover, and the judges were absolutely right that it looked better without the straps. Although it only drove the point home to us how inappropriately low cut the design is for Heidi.

How fucking cute was Ben when the judges were praising his dress? You could tell he was just barely keeping his emotions in check.

Model: Kristina Sajko

We really liked this dress, but we can't agree with the prevailing opinion in the comments section that Ben was "robbed" of his win. Let's break it down.

The colors are beautiful and rich and just interesting enough to make the combination seem refreshingly different.

Loved the belt, although we're not sure if he made it or pulled it off the wall. The judging makes it sound like he made it but the material he originally bought for the belt was a metallic leather. Either way, it was a strong choice.

And we were with Heidi in loving the way he framed the cutout.

But, we're not convinced that this would have been a better choice for the cover shot than Anthony's. While we love the color choices and the color blocking, we tend to think they would have been a bit distracting on a cover. Yes, the Duchess said that this dress "punches through" the noise on a newstand, but it would also fight all the other elements on a magazine cover, namely, all that text.

Don't get us wrong, it's a gorgeous piece, but not necessarily a cover piece.

Project Runway Season 7 Final Collections: Amy, Ben, Jesse

Remember, darlings. We're not giving anything away here. At least half of these collections are decoys. Each designer showed 10 looks.

Anthony, Ben, Seth Aaron

We will always, ALWAYS, support fashion based on Wonder Woman.

We'll get to the dresses in a second, but first:

How fucking cute are they with their little bow ties?

And how cute were these two? You could tell they were genuinely enjoying the hell out of each other. We would have loved to have seen more of their interactions and less of the crying-for-the-cameras stuff. In fact, what made these two so fun were their hilarious attempts NOT to cry.

This is an "almost." There were some good ideas and some bad ideas. We'll commend him for a design that, had it been executed a little better and with some slight adjustments probably would have been pretty flattering for this lady.

We liked the basic concept of this look, but it needed some tweeking to make it look more formal. Sleeves instead of a vest and an extra 6 inches on the hem of the skirt and this really could have been something.

Unfortunately, he, like almost everyone else, used that shiny fabric and in a red, that's never going to look good. We liked the use of the Campbell's logo fabric. It looks much better if you just go ahead and embrace it, instead of trying to disguise it in trims or with pleating.

Confession time: Tom turned to Lorenzo during the episode and said, "In my twenties, I would have totally had a crush on Ben." There's just something about cute, quiet nerds.

And we will never believe that he didn't once again turn to Wonder Woman for inspiration.

There's a lot to like here. For one, it's probably one of, if not THE, most flattering of all the looks this week. There's an issue with the strap under her arm and the slit in the skirt is about 4 inches higher than it needs to go, but it's a simple, classic, elegant design.

We like the Wonder Woman belt, but we just can't get behind metallic gold and Valentine's red in the same dress. A bit too saturated. Oh, and it was kind of cute how he used the Campbell's logo.

We would have loved to see more these two as well. They just had a fun and mutually respectful kind of relationship, like they got each other immediately. Also, did you not love Seth A when he said he wanted to make her happy because she's been through enough shit? We hate the comparison to Jeffrey Sebelia because it's so superficial but we're half tempted to dub him Happy Peanut.

Unfortunately, despite his respect for her, he wound up dressing her like a waitress in a '50s-themed diner. We half expected her to break out into "Rockin' Robin" at the end of the runway. We think if the skirt had been a little less full and the top had a little more going on, it might have worked.

And when we say "a little more going on" we don't mean a Rube Goldberg-like contraption to hide her bra straps by pointing arrows at them. Seriously. What is THAT? We loved him for trying to make her happy, and we loved her for being game enough to wear a design she didn't ask for, but the results were not great.

The Geek Squad

The geeks shall inherit the earth.

How cute are these two?

Attention! The chess club will meet at 3:15 to have their yearbook photos taken! If this conflicts with your gaming club meeting, please see Mr. Tom or Mr. Lorenzo after homeroom to get a slip.

Model: Brittany Oldehoff

We're torn on this look.

We like it, for the most part. It's sporty and it's got some nice details.

And it fits her well, for the most part.

And while we like the seam placements, they're not executed as well as they could be.

But what really bothers us about this look is that it's supposed to be a signature look, put together with the highest budget of any PR challenge ever. Does this look like 500 bucks worth of fabric and 2 days of work to you? It's nice enough, but it just doesn't go there.

Model: Alexis Broker

And yet, strangely, they brought their A game to their B garment.

Models: Lorena Angjeli, Alexis Broker

We really love this look. It's a great (and instantly recognizable) interpretation of the original look. We really like the idea of that sporty jacket paired with a little black dress.

Although to be honest, the dress could have used a bit more loving attention.

But in looking over the looks for this episode, we've been getting frustrated because it looks like most of the teams just banged out a B look without putting too much thought and work into it. Not the geek squad, though. They really thought about it and turned out a look that's in some ways better than their A look. That jacket could have used a lining, though.

Very Good, Good, Not So Good

We're running the gamut, kittens!

Gotta say, after the first two episodes, Emilio is the clear front-runner from where we're sitting.

Model: Holly Ridings

Because THAT is a knockout of a dress. And all the people who had less-than-kind things to say about Holly's looks can shut it because that bitch's walk can knock a house down.

More than just having superior technical skills and design skills, Emilio's also got a surprisingly strong sense of style. She's the epitome of looking put together.

We like how he used a technique similar to the one he used last week - overlaid panels of a contrasting fabric - but made a dress totally different from the previous one.

And it fits her like a glove. Shouldabin a top 3 at least.

Speak up, Ben. No, really. "Quiet" gets you auf'd. Loudmouths get camera time. Honestly, do we have to teach you everything?

Model: Sophia Lee

It's alright. Ben described this as a classic dress that can be worn now or ten years from now. Well, we kinda had a strong negative reaction to that idea.

This is, after all, a design competition. When you deliberately go for a design that's so classic it doesn't fit into any time period, that's another way of saying "I'm playing it safe."

There's nothing really wrong with the dress. It fits. It's a pretty color. It's cute. But it's just kinda boring.

And we don't think he accomplished the "upside down tulip" thing he said he was going for.

Anna seems sweet, but she really needs to take a deep breath, find her center, and lighten the fuck up.

Model: Cerri McQuillan

Because while this dress demonstrates a technical precision, it is one morose-looking garment. A Dorothea Lange photograph in dress form.

And we don't think it's the dye job. She actually wound up with a subtle, sophisticated print and she could have gone in a lot of directions with it.

But going the "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" route was probably not the best use of it.

Not to mention, the fit wasn't all that great. It kind of hung on her body. And that drab ribbon was a horrible choice for trim.

We think her earnest, intellectual approach has a place at the table, but in the end, you have to make clothes that people enjoy looking at and want to wear. These over-studied pieces of hers aren't going to keep her in the game.
