Jesse & Jonathan

Boys in the middle.

Model: Alexis Broker

This was a surprisingly good entry from Jesse.

We say that because frankly, we haven't liked anything he's sent down that runway before this. Sure, it just skirts up to the border of tacky, but we're talking Heidi here. Lots of thigh and lots of boob are to be expected. We really like the weave and the way he did the cups.

The back is kind of a mess, though.

And while he's to be commended for using a rich color, the fabric reads a little downscale.

Model: Alison Gingerich

Jonathan was so proud of his little romper but we had a hard time signing onto it. Mainly because, romper, y'know?.

But it drapes nicely and it's executed pretty flawlessly, so he's got that.

And loath as we are to admit it, fashion editors do love rompers even if all right-thinking people do not.

Bottom line is it's trendy and it had a lot of nice touches. The only thing working against it is the lack of color. Had this been rendered in eye-catching hues, we bet Joanna Coles would have been all over it.

But look how cute he is when he's all proud. He's so Pixar.

Emilio & Anna

Last but not...well actually, yeah. Kinda.

"We could've been more innovative but I'm working with someone who has very little experience so I had to scale down just to make sure we had a gown on the runway."

These two didn't make a very good team. They were pretty much drama-free, but that doesn't mean they were bringing the best out of each other. She's too much in her own head and he doesn't seem to have much patience for her inexperience. Result?

Model: Cerri McQuillan
Mediocre.

Once again, the crass question that we need to ask: Do you see 500 bucks here?

And where is the technical skill we've come to expect from Emilio?

And where's the sense of fun he brought to both of his previous garments?

It's basic and dour and not particularly well made.

Model: Valeria Leonova/Alison Gingerich

And while this is at least a much cuter dress, it wasn't without its problems. For one, what the hell does this have to do with Maya and Jay's dress? It shares not one similar design element except for color.

And it too, is pretty damn basic.

Cute, absolutely, and well made. But basic.

And we're not crazy about the sheer skirt.

And that's about all we have to say about that.

Girlz Rool!

Ladies to the dance floor, please!

We're liking her. She's low-key without being boring (yet) and she seems creative, even if last week's effort was an insult to breasts everywhere. She certainly made up for it this week.

And we are totally digging the '68 model Streisand eye makeup, by the way.

Model: Alison Gingerich

Not just super-cute, but really creative and thought out. In fact, shouldabin the winner.

The masterful dye and construction job on the skirt is the first thing you notice of course, but we really think that top is what makes the look.

It drapes beautifully and rather than disguise the burlap, it draws attention to it by saying "Hey, look how soft and drapey I made this potato sack look." We also really like the bands on the edges and the waist, which gave it structure.

To have such a beautifully constructed top AND a beautifully dyed skirt is what made this, to our way of thinking, the clear winner. We don't know what the judges were thinking on that front. It seemed obvious to us.

About the only criticism we can make is that the skirt is a bit too much of a tutu.

Still, after last week's boobtrocity, she came back strong and is making us think she's one to watch.

And speaking of one to watch, don't turn your back on Mila, darlings, she's a bit crazy.

Honestly, we don't know WHAT the hell happened there, but she went from the calm, cool, collected pro we assumed she was into a moody little sophomore in the blink of an eye. And for what? Because some model she barely knows didn't pick her for the dodgeball team? Honey, get a grip. Focus on your competitors. Who gives a shit what some model thinks?

Model: Lorena Angjeli

Despite the high school drama of it all, she pulled together a knockout look.

This is exactly the kind of thing a model would wear to an "industry party;" short, tight, and at least a little bit of shiny.

The only thing is...
What the hell's going on there? Strange, because the rest of the dress is impeccably made.

And the detailing is gorgeous.

The only real issue is the slightly strange fit on this thing; loose and tight in weird places.

Still, she's also one to watch. Especially if there are sharp objects in the room. She can get a little testy.

Boys on the Bottom

Kittens, we WILL NOT STAND another season of disappointing gays. We're hoping this will be the last time we're forced to use another variation of "bottom" and "boys" in the post title.

We think Lifetime is really missing out on a merchandising opportunity by not offering Jesus dolls. Come on! Don't you just wanna prop him up on a pillow somewhere and make little outfits for him?

Model: Brittany Oldehoff

Unfortunately, cute as he is, he may not be here much longer if he sends more efforts like this down the runway.

Darlings, the word to keep in mind here is "instincts," as in:

Not having them.

Let's start with the fabric choice. Right there, you've got to question the instincts. While this might have been used to make a great jacket OR a great skirt OR a great pair of pants, to look at this and think of making an entire dress out of it...well. Those are some questionable instincts.

And to think you can go from a mini-dress to a gown just by adding some extra yardage...well. That too is a questionable instinct.

And finally, to not stop anywhere during this process and step back and say to yourself, "Shit. I just made a shoe," well.

You know the rest.

The actual design of the dress is fine. Had it been rendered in a more appropriate fabric, he probably would have skated through without comment.

And he even has decent technical skills.

But the fact of the matter is, there is, in the immortal phrasing of Señorita Garcia, "a taste issue." And the bad news for Jesus is, once the judges decide you have a taste issue, it's virtually impossible to convince them otherwise.

Darlings, it is a little-known phenomenon that young southern black queens sound almost exactly like old southern black church ladies. All Anthony needs is a fan and a little hat with some netting and he could be Oprah Winfrey in The Color Purple.

But Miss Sophia, we're here to tell you...

Model: Alison Gingerich

Child, you made a mess.

That is just too much dress for that fabric.

This is an instance where someone shouldn't have listened to Tim because we thought he was heading in a better direction by introducing a complementary fabric to break up the heavy floral-ness of that pattern. Granted, we didn't like the direction he was going in with it, but discouraging him from using it at all sent him on a path that was not much better than the one he was on.

Miss Sophia's going to need to learn some editing skills in order to stay in the game. It seems to us like he wanted to throw every trick he had at this one dress.

The result was that none of his tricks were particularly well done. The fit on the butt was terrible and the hem was a mess.

Plus, the bust was a nightmare...

And that thing on the hip just took it past the point of no return.

But, if he'd toned down some of the elements and did them cleanly, and if he'd stuck with his instincts and used other fabrics, he could have had a truly interesting and pretty dress. There's potential there and we think the judges can recognize a designer who just might blossom with a little hand-holding.
